"Colon cancer is the leading cause of deaths among all people, yet it is often preventable. The rate of colon cancer for older persons is almost double the rate for the younger adult population. This disease spreads slowly and silently. IIf it is detected early the survival rates are extremely high (91%), but if it is not found until later stages it can be fatal.
In this session you will learn about:
- The rates of colon cancer in New York State and the impacton the elderly and minority populations.
- Risk factors for colon cancer and what you can do to reduce your risk.
- What tests are available to help detect and prevent colon cancer.
- What Medicare will cover for colon cancer screening.
- How older persons and caregivers can obtain help in dealing with colon cancer through the American Cancer Society.
- Advocacy efforts underway in New York State for policy changes to increase access to prevention, screening for early detection, and reduce out of pockets costs.
